Gadjah Mada University, which has taken on a new status as a state-owned legal entity since December 26, 2000, is the oldest and largest university in Indonesia. It was founded on December 9, 1949 and currently has 18 faculties, 71 undergraduate study programs, 28 diploma study programs and a Graduate Program of 62 study programs with around 55,000 students, 350 foreign students, 2,301 employees, and 2,266 lecturers. Up until October 2003, the University has graduated 134,219 students consisting of 17,358 diploma holders, 94,923 first degree holders, 21,406 masters and 532 PhD holders.
Being the first national university established after our national independence, our vision as reflected in the research and education activities have been more focused on the community empowerment & development, pro-poor people and sustainable-oriented development stategies.
Having conducted some evaluation that used 6 criteria, a well-known British daily newspaper, The Times, announced the survey result of Universities all over the world which are: (a) peer review; (b) recruiter review; (c) international faculty; (d) international students; (e) ratio of lecturers and staff to students; (f) lecturer’s citation index; as the basic of arrangement; (g) total score, thus, the best world’s class university lists are categorized as follows:
1. World’s top 200 universities
2. World’s top 100 science universities
3. World’s top 100 technology universities
4. World’s top 100 biomedicines universities
5. World’s top 100 social sciences universities
6. World’s top 100 arts and humanities universities
Furthermore, UGM succeeds improving its quality as world’s class university in 3 categories, they are:
1. Ranked 47th in the world, in social sciences category
2. Ranked 73rd in the world, in biomedicine sciences category
3. Ranked 70th in the world, in arts and humanities sciences category
On one hand, the acknowledgement is the result of academics who keep accelerating quality improvement of academic, research, management, and cooperation. On the other hand, the acknowledgement will be considered as a challenge to gain more achievement in the future. One of the challenges is to improve UGM’s quality in the world of science and technology so that UGM can be part of general category of world’s class university.
